I have heard and read from AI fans that AI is like a calculator. Would you calculate difficult stuff by hand when you have a calculator available?
First of all, despite we have calculator, we are still teaching kids to do math in head and on paper. Even the advanced one in universities.
Second of all, AI is not a calculator. It is more of an autocorrect. And autocorrect, as many of you experience all the time, sucks. It makes a lot of mistakes. LLMs are just glorified autocorrect that can predict more than the next word. And the mistakes accumulate the more complex the question is.
Calculator is deterministic, AI is not. Calculator makes predictable mistakes that can be counted in and fixed if needed. AI does not.
So AI can be useful for sure. But it is definitely not a calculator and you should not use it like it is one and outsource your thinking to it.
