I am listening to best albums per decade according to https://www.albumoftheyear.org/ and i noticed that perfect scores from critics go down over decades. For sure it is also caused by a bit bigger number of reviewers, but I think it is also about diversification of music.
In the 50s most top rated albums were Jazz or Classical. And critics with music background can probably all agree that that is music. But as we progress into metal, rap and other modern genres, it is no longer clear.
I like some metal albums but cannot stand many and consider them thrash. The opposite goes for metal fans about hip-hop. But for classical music, most people will like it to a degree.
This diversification will increase over time as we have more people, more genres and more stuff overall. It is the same symptom as we see with politics and life in general. Bigger divides because we do not even have a common ground.
