Let’s start with some numbers. My shortest book was Death and What Comes Next by Terry Pratchett (1 page) and longest was The Ultimate Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams (815 pages, even tough it is more like 6 books in a bundle). I have read 68 books with 11888 pages total coming to 174 pages per book on average. My average rating was 3.7 out of five so not great not terrible in terms of seleciton.
Now as to the top 10 from what I have read.
- Kapitán Stein a notár Barbarič Series – I have read first 10 books currently out of and all of them are great. If you want to know more about history in Austria-Hungary region in the late middla ages in a fun way, this is a series for you. Juraj Červenák is one of the best authors we have in Slovakia right now.
- Démon súhlasu – Dominik Tatarka masterfully described how agreeing with something you are against breaks character.
- Patterns of Strategy – Amazing book on business strategy with clear and easy to use framework and lot of examples.
- The Ultimate Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy – Some books are better, some are worse, but overall it is an amazing piece of literature. Funny and educational at the same time.
- Cosmos – TV series by Carl Sagan is better but the book has a lot that did not fit a TV, more depth and insights. If you want to be inspired, read this.
- Walt Disney’s Grandpa Bunny – This children’s book actually made me cry. Heartwarming sad story.
- Adamko, zachránené prasiatko – Another one nice book for children, this time with a happy ending.
- Náš súdruh Winston Smith a iné texty – Especially the 1984 analysis by Milan Šimečka is a must read.
- Nesmrtelnost – Milan Kundera writing about death in his specific style. Not sure if it changes anyone’s perspective on life, but it brings a lot of things to think about.
- Neprebudený – Slovak classic by Martin Kukučín about society and its handling of disabled people in the past, which has still a lot to say about today.
