I have read about Steve Jobs that he does not allow his children to use iPhones, or Bill Gates doing similar stuff with social networks and his kids. Not sure if it is true, but it made me think. If you and your company is building and selling something, that you would not let your kids use, aren’t you a drug dealer?
Because this is the exact same thinking people in cartels have. It is ok to sell the stuff and ruin people lives, but never allow your kids near it. And you offload the responsibility of keeping their kids away from drugs to other parents and people.
But most people would agree, that this is flawed thinking. The drug dealer is at fault in a large way for the suffering of others. Where there is no supply, there cannot be any demand.
By the same principle, companies and people building addictive social networks, ad networks and the rest are also responsible for the suffering of others.
And if you own e.g. ETF funds, you are basically co-owner of those drug dealerships.
I do not have answers, it just made me think about the scale of responsibility.
