My 2023 in Movies

I have not seen that many movies last year, but I saw a couple of great ones. Here is the top 10.

Life Is Beautiful (1997)

The only thing I regret about this movie is, that I have not seen it sooner. It is a masterpiece. Sad, funny, insightful. Roberto Benigni is amazing. 10/10

Springsteen On Broadway (2018)

I have already written about this. One of the best musical and theatrical performances I have ever seen. 9/10

Oppenheimer (2023)

Christopher Nolan did it again. He is easily the best director of his generation, and I already cannot wait for his next movie. Great storytelling, keeping close to history and facts, amazing camera and performances. Worth to watch in a theater. 9/10

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)

It was hard to imagine they will top the first movie, but they did it. The opening sequence is breathtaking and the movie as a whole is keeping you on your toes. Hopefully the grand finale will be at least as good. I watched this in theater with my son and despite its length, he was amazed the whole time. 9/10

To Be or Not to Be (1942)

Very funny comedy about Nazis from when the war was still going on. I laughed a lot. 9/10

Before Sunrise/Sunset/Midnight (1995/2004/2013)

Breakthrough trilogy, shot about ten years apart between movies about the same couple from when they first met through everything else. I hope they keep shooting more each ten year until the actors are alive. 9/10

Flight of the Conchords: Live in London (2018)

Musical comedy duo from New Zealand singing about life. Very funny and also musically interesting. 9/10

Here is just a bit of their comedy

Ricky Gervais: Armageddon (2023)

Ricky is back and he goes hard. This is not a kind, unoffensive comedy you could see in Derek, but Ricky as a stand-up comedian as he always was. Starting with Holocaust jokes and going worse. 9/10

Life of Crime: 1984-2020 (2021)

Documentary about one man and his life. Story of poverty, crime, family, love, drugs, hope and disappointment. 9/10

Vir Das: Landing (2022)

Indian comedian Vir Das dealing with relationship to his country. Moving, funny, educational. 9/10
